Is the Future eBooks or Apps?

For publishers, content is king, and most educational publishers are taking their content and producing it in a variety of media from print to eBooks to whiteboards. Nicholas Callaway, founder of Callaway Arts and Entertainment, though, believes that the future is all about the app. He has taken his company, which was a high-end publisher of illustrated books, and transformed it into Callaway Digital Arts that primarily creates programs for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad.

Nicholas Callaway, founder of Callaway Arts and Entertainment, though, believes that the future is all about the app. He has taken his company, which was a high-end publisher of illustrated books, and transformed it into Callaway Digital Arts that primarily creates programs for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. While other publishers are working on bigger and better ebooks, Callaway sees the app as a watershed moment.

In an in-depth interview with Reuters, he talks about the changes in the industry, why he is focusing on the app, his role as an “experience creator,” and
what these drastic changes meant for his company.

“I went to my staff and said, ‘It’s time to burn the boats,’” he said to Reuters. “We are going to transform ourselves … and we are going to have to find a whole new set of skills to become app developers.”
