A Distinguished Role for Print Books in the E-Book World?

There are still some instances where print works best in the classroom, but as the trade world moves toward producing more apps and e-books, what is the future role of the print volume? In an interview with Knowledge@Wharton, Alberto Vitale, former CEO of Random House, says he thinks that paper books will never go away. Instead, as ebooks become easier and cheaper to produce, print books will “evolve into much more precious products. [They will be] better-printed, better-bound, better-produced and better-marketed, even at much higher prices.”

In addition, Vitale still sees a role for national publishers and bookstores in a self-publishing world. He comments that we are just at the beginning of seeing the potential in digital books, and it depends on how these organizations adapt and lead in this new era that will determine who survives.
