Solution Tree and Teachscape Win AEP’s Inaugural “Innovation Award”

With an abundance of high-quality educational resources submitted to this year’s Distinguished Achievement Awards given by the AEP, 11 products stood out as incredibly innovative to the education market.

“When it comes to innovation in educational product development, publishers often do not receive recognition for breaking the mold on how to teach and learn,” said Charlene Gaynor, CEO of AEP.

AEP created the Innovation Awards to recognize those products that aid in the teaching and learning process in a truly creative and inventive way. In the award’s inaugural year, AEP has named two professional development products as recipients of this honor: Teachscape Reflect and Implementing RTI with English Learners, developed by Teachscape and Solution Tree.

“With more than 800 entries in this year’s awards program our judges handpicked each of the finalists on the merits of solving an educational problem for either teachers or students in a truly innovative manner,” Gaynor continued. “We congratulate each of the selected companies for creating these exemplary products.”

Teachscape Reflect combines state-of-the-art 360-degree video capture hardware and online software, allowing teachers to reflect on their instructional techniques, share best practices, and receive timely coaching support using panoramic video of classroom instruction. After the video is captured and uploaded, educators can review the footage comment on their practices, and share their videos with other teachers, coaches and principals.

Implementing RTI with English Learners presents an approach that every teacher can use to ensure that English learners access the core curriculum and achieve at high levels. The book helps educators learn why Response to Intervention (RTI) is the ideal framework for supporting English learners and find clear guidelines for distinguishing between a lack of language proficiency and having a learning difference. In addition, educators can follow the application and effectiveness of RTI through numerous classroom examples and through the stories of four representative students of varying ages, nationalities, and language proficiency levels.

The complete list of Innovation Award finalists includes: Investigations Into Economic Class In America from aha! Process, Explore the Blue from Discovery Education, Turnitin from iParadigms, K12 Math + Program from K12, Echo Smartpen from LiveScribe Inc., Grammar Fitness Online from Merit Software, National Geographic Online from National Geographic Education, Real-World Vocabulary from PCI Education, and Flip Boom Classic Art Curriculum from Toon Boom Animation.

As part of the award, both winners and finalists showcased their products at AEP’s Policy Briefing on Capitol Hill on June 9, 2011. This provided the companies an opportunity to show legislative staff and education officials the ingenuity present in educational publishing and to talk with them about the opportunities and barriers for innovation in education.
